Hundreds of celebrities dazzled in extravagant outfits as they walked the red carpet at the 2023 Met Gala last night. Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, anybody who’s anybody was in attendance of Hollywood’s biggest fashion extravaganza, including Rihanna, the Jenners, Dua Lipa, Stormzy and J-Lo.
This year, the Met Gala theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, with A-listers dressing in tribute to the legacy of the late fashion designer.
Among the red carpet looks were vintage Chanel, Fendi, and his own self-titled fashion house, as well as some running themes like pearls, Chanel’s trademark camellia flower and feline fashion, with Jared Leto transforming himself into a giant cat.
Naturally, these high-end designer suits and gowns don’t come cheap, but we’ve found some pretty affordable high street alternatives inspired by some of the night’s hottest viral fits.
Shoppers need not lust over Ralph Lauren slips or Marc Jacobs' body suits when they can get the look for less at Boohoo, New Look and ASOS.
A$AP Rocky was one of the later arrivals of the evening, turning up with Rihanna, who is pregnant with her second child. He wore a fairly tame white shirt, black tie and blazer, from Gucci, pairing it with a pair of baggy jeans and a midi-length tartan skirt.
With the popularity of musicals like Heathers, tartan could certainly have its moment in 2023, with these longer silhouettes like this Allegra plaid skirt from Amazon, which is under £40 .
Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner showed off her pins in a black sequined bodysuit with dramatic sleeves and a silver collar from Marc Jacobs. While absolutely gorgeous, it’s not something one could get away with wearing for your average night out, but Boohoo’s long sleeve black sequined bodycon dress definitely offers an inspired look for less, costing just £25, down from £50 - and you’ll get way more wear out of it than Kendall.
Official co-host Dua Lipa was one of the first to arrive in a bridal look originally worn by Claudia Schiffer on the autumn/winter 1992 Chanel runway. Boucle is set to be a big trend this season, with Chanel-inspired co-ords already seen circling on TikTok.
To achieve that classic Chanel look, there’s a beautiful set in River Island in a cream shade that’s super cute for a bridal brunch.
The Last Of Us actor, Pedro Pascal, wore Valentino to the star-studded event, opting for chunky black boots, a red shirt, black tie and shorts, and a long red overcoat. Wearing Ralph Lauren, Jennifer Lopez styled a velvet wrap around bodice with a huge train and long flowing light pink slip skirt - incredible for the red carpet but not quite as versatile for an everyday wardrobe. With a midi length, it’s much more practical and can be paired with t-shirts and crop tops in summer, or worn with a knit for the more transitional seasons.
Kylie Jenner stunned on the red carpet in a red gown from Jean Paul Gaultier by Haider Ackermann. The dress featured a thigh-high split and one-shoulder detail, similar to this design from ASOS . The premium asymmetric cut out maxi dress in red comes in at £90 and has a similar leg split, one long sleeve and a gorgeous draping with slash detail.
Model Cara Delevigne dipped into the Karl Lagerfeld archive with a white dramatically oversized shirt and white mini skirt. These micro skirts have been springing up on a number of retailers and have largely sold out, but we found one on H&M for £17.99 . The linen blend mini features a small split and a concealed zip, available in sizes 10 to 22.
Tennis star Serena Williams announced her pregnancy ahead of appearing on the red carpet, taking to Instagram with a snap of her and her partner Alexis Ohanian, captioned: “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.”

Kate Moss and her look-a-like daughter Lila wore a matching colour palette from Fendi, Lila in a fluffy peachy pink gown, and supermodel Kate in a champagne coloured slip. Underwear as outerwear is something we’ve seen more and more of recently, and Kate does it better than anyone.
For a more wearable dupe, Boohoo is stocking this petite bridesmaid satin cowl neck maxi dress in champagne for £31.50 , instead of £35, which is also available in a very pretty sage colour, which is a trend among 2023 weddings.
Looking dapper in Burberry was rapper Stormzy in a black and blue rose patterned suit. If you’ve got an upcoming event and fancy something a little less traditional, Boohoo MAN have a great alternative to the designer co-ord with this paisley jacquard number.
The high street version features a slim double breasted blazer for £49, down from £70, as well as matching trousers for £21 in the slim fit, or £15 for tall. To really achieve the Stormzy look, you could pair with a black roll neck and patent shoes to complete the Met Gala outfit.
