11 bedding sets for the best night’s sleep, recommended by an interiors editor

I paid attention to temperature regulation, comfort and quality - (Ali Howard/The Independent)

The best bedding sets can completely shift how a bedroom feels. Over the past few years, I’ve tested everything from crisp hotel-style cotton bedding to weighty linens and silky bamboo blends, swapping sets in and out across seasons to see what genuinely holds up. Some look great for a week, then lose their appeal after a couple of washes. Others soften, settle and earn a permanent spot in the rotation.

From my tests, I’ve learned that fabric matters far more than thread count alone. Percale, which is a type of cotton weave, tends to suit hot sleepers, thanks to its breathable, matte finish, while sateen brings a smoother, slightly weightier feel. Linen, meanwhile, is textured, airy and better with age. Practicality is something to consider, too, so I noted whether they wash easily, whether colours fade and how fast they dry.

For this roundup, I’ve focused on bedding sets that balance comfort, durability and design. From affordable everyday options to more considered investment pieces, these are the best bedding sets you’ll love diving into at the end of the day.

Woolroom arinta organic cotton linen bundle

Rating: 5/5

Best: bedding set overall

Sizes: Single, double, king, super king

Set: Includes duvet cover, fitted sheet and pillowcases

Colours: Light pink, light grey-blue, beige, green, white

Fabric: 100 per cent organic cotton percale

Why we love it

  • Naturally hypoallergenic
  • Super soft
  • Breathable

Take note

  • Needs a pre-wash to soften

Woolroom’s arinta bedding keeps things simple in the best possible way, and is the best bedding set I tested. Made from 100 per cent organic cotton percale, it has the kind of crisp, smooth feel you get in a good hotel – cool, breathable and noticeably fresh against the skin.

Expect a crisp, smooth feel (Ali Howard/The Independent)

The 200 thread count gives it a lightweight but palpably durable finish, and it softens up nicely over time. Made in Portugal, which is well-known for producing high-quality cotton, it’s naturally hypoallergenic, and comes in softly-dyed, contemporary shades, should you want to veer from the classic white (or mix and match).

Scoring points on versatility too, you can build a bundle or pick up pieces separately, which makes it easy to tailor. It’s straightforward to care for too, too – simply wash at 40C and line dry or tumble on low.

Dunelm Durham stripe 100 per cent cotton duvet cover and pillowcase set

Rating: 4/5

Best: budget bedding set

Sizes: Single, double, king, super king

Set: Includes duvet cover and pillowcases

Colours: Pink/white stripe, navy/white stripe, beige/white stripe, green/white stripe

Fabric: 100 per cent cotton

Why we love it

  • Budget-friendly
  • Fresh, modern colourways
  • Reversible

Take note

  • Lower thread count
  • Not as soft as others

A good stripe can do a lot of heavy lifting, and Dunelm’s Durham stripe set not only looks good, but for £20, it’s also good value, making it my recommended bedding set for those on a budget. The stripe design is simple enough to work in most bedrooms, while the pear colourway adds a softer, fresher take on a classic stripe, with a fully flippable design – you’ll find finer lines on the reverse.

There’s a finer stripe on the underside (Ali Howard/The Independent)

Crafted from 100 per cent cotton with a 144 thread count, the bedding feels light and breathable, but still durable enough for heavy, regular use. The button fastening keeps everything in place, and I found it refreshingly easy to care for, too: machine washable, low tumble dry and a cool iron if needed, making this an effortlessly chic option.

Habitat seersucker plain white bedding set

Rating: 4/5

Best: polyester-cotton blend bedding set

Sizes: Single, double, king

Set: Includes duvet cover and pillowcases

Colours: White

Fabric: 52 per cent polyester, 48 per cent cotton

Why we love it

  • Brilliant white
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to care for
  • Affordable

Take note

  • Not as soft as 100 per cent cotton

Snowy white and refreshingly simple, Habitat’s seersucker plain white bedding set set proves that pure white doesn’t have to mean flat. The seersucker weave boasts a gently puckered texture, giving it a bit of movement and interest while still keeping things light and airy.

The gently puckered texture gives movement (The Independent)

Made from a polyester-cotton blend, it’s soft, low-maintenance and holds up well to regular use. The 144 thread count keeps it feeling breathable rather than heavy, too, which is a win for hot sleepers.

It’s machine washable at 40C and tumble dry friendly, so there’s very little effort involved in caring for it. It does need an initial wash straight out of the packet to ensure it softens up, but this is a good option if you like your bedding crisp, clean and fuss-free, with texture doing the talking.

Catherine Lansfield cove stripe duvet cover set

Rating: 4/5

Best: easy-to-wash bedding set

Sizes: Single, double, king

Set: Includes duvet cover and pillowcases

Colours: Blue/white stripe, beige/white stripe, light blue/white stripe , green/white stripe

Fabric: Recycled polyester and cotton blend

Why we love it

  • Reversible
  • Soft
  • Easy to care for

Take note

  • No super king size

For the best value for money, Catherine Lansfield’s cove stripe duvet cover is reversible, so you get two cover designs for the price of one. A stripe design is always chic, and the wide blue and neutral bands feel breezy and coastal, while the reverse – a finer ribbon stripe – gives you an easy switch-up when the mood shifts.

It stays looking sharp between washes (Ali Howard/The Independent)

The 52 per cent polyester, 48 per cent cotton blend (with recycled fibres in the mix) lands in a practical sweet spot: soft enough for everyday comfort, and sturdy enough to handle regular 40C washes. It tumble dries well, too, which is always a win.

While it isn’t as soft or well-crafted as other sets I tested, it's hard to argue with the price, especially given how fuss-free it is to care for, and that it stays looking sharp between washes.

Next the set eight-piece natural/stripe frill bedding set

Rating: 4/5

Best: value for money bedding set

Sizes: Single, double, super king

Set: Includes two duvet covers, two fitted sheets and four pillowcases

Colours: Beige stripe; pink gingham

Fabric: 100 per cent cotton

Why we love it

  • Easy to care for
  • Can mix and match
  • Trendy frill design

Take note

  • Not as soft as other cottons

An eight-piece bedding set is a bit of a rarity, but Next’s frill set makes a strong case for them. You get two full sets in one – two duvet covers, two fitted sheets and four pillowcases – which feels genuinely useful rather than excessive, especially given the affordable price point. It comes into its own on laundry day, when you can swap everything out without scrambling for spare sheets.

This two-set is a convenient option (Ali Howard/The Independent)

Design-wise, it keeps things easy: one plain natural set, one with a simple stripe, both in a heavy 100 per cent cotton that feels reliably durable for everyday use. The fitted sheets have a standard 28cm depth, and everything is designed to throw in the washing machine and dryer, so this is as low-maintenance as it gets.

Emma J Shipley lynx bedding set

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: patterned bedding set

Sizes: Single, double, king, super king

Set: Includes duvet cover and choice of standard or Oxford pillowcases

Colours: Pink or navy illustration

Fabric: 100 per cent cotton sateen

Why we love it

  • Unique hand-drawn design
  • Reversible
  • Silky soft

Take note

  • Not suitable for tumble drying

Emma J Shipley’s lynx bedding set is for those who appreciate the finer things in life. The hand-drawn design – winged lynx, peacock tails, starry skies – is bold and fantastical, with a rich mix of blush, emerald and pistachio tones. Flip it over and there’s a calmer charcoal and blush reverse, so you can dial things up or down depending on your mood.

The fantastical design has been hand-drawn (Ali Howard/The Independent)

The bedding is made from 100 per cent cotton sateen with a 275 thread count, and it boasts a smooth, silky feel that sits nicely against the skin. Thoughtful details like internal ties, button fastenings and the choice of Oxford pillowcases with piping add to the overall finish. Plus it comes packed in matching drawstring bags, giving it an extra layer of luxury. Care-wise, it’s a 30C wash or dry clean, with air-drying recommended to keep everything looking sharp.

Best: bamboo bedding set

Fabric: 100 per cent bamboo

Why we love it

  • Good silk alternative
  • Well-crafted
  • Naturally temperature regulating

Take note

  • Comes slightly oversized to allow for shrinkage

Ideal if you tend to overheat, Pretty You London’s bamboo bedding set is made from 100 per cent bamboo viscose with a smooth, silky finish that feels cool to the touch. It’s naturally breathable and thermoregulating, helping keep things comfortable through the night, with added antibacterial properties for a fresher sleep setup.

It’s slightly oversized but settles properly after the first wash (Ali Howard/The Independent)

The unmistakably glamorous set includes a duvet cover, fitted sheet and two Oxford pillowcases, all designed with a slightly oversized fit that settles properly after the first wash. It softens up even more over time, too.

The set is reliably simple to care for: wash at 30C, fasten the buttons before laundering, and either line dry or tumble on low to keep it looking fresh.

West Elm Frankie floral reversible duvet cover and pillowcases

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: floral bedding set

Sizes: Double, king, super king

Set: Includes duvet cover and pillowcases

Colours: Green, blue and white floral pattern

Fabric: 100 per cent cotton

Why we love it

  • Timeless design
  • Reversible
  • Discreet zip closures on pillowcase

Take note

  • No single size available

The best floral bedding sets have a way of making a bedroom feel instantly more inviting, and West Elm’s Frankie floral reversible set leans into that while still feeling modern. The print is soft and easy to live with – delicate, muted blooms rather than anything too bold – and it’s fully reversible with a subtle check design on the back.

It’s smooth and breathable (Ali Howard/The Independent)

Made from 100 per cent cotton, it feels smooth and breathable, with details that keep things practical: button fastening, internal corner ties to hold the duvet in place, and discreet zip closures on the pillowcases. So discreet, in fact, that I had trouble finding them.

It’s Fair Trade certified and OEKO-TEX approved, and it’s reliably straightforward to care for – just a gentle warm wash, low tumble dry and a quick iron if needed (that’s the beauty of ditsy florals, they’re forgiving on creases).

Chalk Pink Linen Co. warm butterscotch linen bedding bundle

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: linen bedding set

Sizes: Double, king, super king

Set: Includes duvet cover, fitted sheet and pillowcases

Colours: Green, grey/white stripe, white, grey/white gingham, pastel pink, darker pink, brown, blue, blue/white stripe, natural, mid-brown, light grey, dark navy blue

Fabric: 100 per cent organic cotton percale

Why we love it

  • Low maintenance
  • Buttery soft feel
  • Breathable

Take note

  • No single size

The best linen bedding set has to be Chalk Pink Linen Co’s. I particularly like the warm butterscotch shade as it instantly softens a bedroom – rich, earthy and a bit more interesting than your usual neutrals.

It softens with time (Chalk Pink Linen Co.)

Made from 100 per cent European flax linen, the set is stonewashed for a relaxed, lived-in feel straight out of the box, and it only gets softer with time. It’s breathable, naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial, so it works well year-round, especially if you prefer bedding that feels airy rather than heavy.

The set includes a duvet cover with button fastening plus two pillowcases, but there’s also the option of a bundle in this colourway, which includes a deep fitted sheet in a clean white for contrast. There’s no ironing needed (linen always looks best when naturally crumpled) and it’s easy to care for – just wash at 40C and let the texture do the rest.

Naturalmat mizzle washed organic cotton duvet cover

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: mid-range bedding set

Sizes: Single, double, king, super king, emperor

Set: Includes duvet cover (pillowcases and sheet sold separately)

Colours: Dark green, dusty pink

Fabric: 100 per cent organic washed cotton

Why we love it

  • Super soft
  • Contemporary colourways
  • Like linen, looks great un-ironed

Take note

  • Pieces sold separately

The Naturalmat washed organic cotton bedding boasts a relaxed, rumpled look that works straight out of the box. Made in Portugal, which is renowned for high-quality cotton, the GOTS-certified cotton has been gently laundered for a soft, tumbled finish that drapes easily and feels breathable from night one.

It has a soft, tumbled finish (Ali Howard/The Independent)

The texture is part of the appeal, so no ironing is needed – it’s designed to look better a little undone, and it softens further over time. The muted “mizzle” shade – inspired by soft Devon skies – adds to the calm, easy feel.

Details have been considered here too. The bedding’s buttons are made from tagua nut, while it also has a OEKO-TEX certification, which means the material is free from harmful substances, and safe even for babies.

Care is, thankfully, low effort: I found it washes well at 30C, and should be line dried or tumble dried on low to keep it looking its best. What I love most about this bedding set is that it looks and feels like pure linen – but at half the price. Just keep in mind you’ll need to buy extras like pillowcases separately.

Pottery Barn essential sateen duvet cover and pillowcase

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: minimalist bedding set

Sizes: Double/king, super king

Set: Includes duvet cover (pillowcases, square or standard, sold separately)

Colours: White

Fabric: 100 per cent cotton sateen

Why we love it

  • Silky smooth
  • Matching square pillowcases available

Take note

  • No single size available
  • Pieces sold separately

Pottery Barn’s essential sateen duvet cover and pillowcase keeps things clean and pared back, with a focus on feel and finish. The 100 per cent cotton sateen has a smooth, lustrous surface, and with a 300 thread count, it looks and feels noticeably softer and more polished than standard cotton.

Look forward to a smooth, lustrous surface (Ali Howard/The Independent)

Hand-pleated detailing adds a subtle layer of texture, enough to lift it beyond plain without overcomplicating the look. Practical touches are all there: a hidden button closure, internal ties to keep the duvet in place, and envelope closures on the pillowcases.

Everything is OEKO-TEX certified, too. It’s also easy to care for – a warm gentle wash, low tumble dry, and just light iron. My only gripe? Pieces are sold separately, although that does mean you can build your own combination.

Your questions on bedding sets answered

What are the best bedding sets?

Woolroom’s Arinta organic cotton bedding bundle takes the top spot as the best bedding set for its balance of comfort, practicality and everyday ease. The breathable fabric makes it a good year-round option, particularly for warmer sleepers or anyone who prefers bedding with a cooler, smoother finish. It also has a clean, hotel-style look that works in almost any bedroom.

For a more relaxed, textured look, Chalk Pink Linen Co.’s butterscotch linen set is a luxe alternative. The colour and gently rumpled finish brings warmth and depth, and it softens beautifully the more you use it. But if value for money is the priority, the Next eight-piece set stands out for its practicality, as having a second set to swap in is genuinely useful.

How I tested bedding sets

I assessed a range of different bedding sets in my own bedroom, when I paid attention to factors such as comfort, temperature regulation and ease of care. You can read a full breakdown of my testing criteria at the end of this article.

What is a good thread count for sheets?

Quality is usually measured in thread count, which refers to the number of threads woven together per square inch, and thread count typically sits between 200 and 400. Percale cotton (often around 200–300) feels crisp, light and breathable, making it a solid choice for warmer sleepers. Sateen weaves tend to start higher (from around 300) and feel smoother and slightly more substantial. Anything much higher isn’t always better – it can come down to how the fabric is woven and the quality of the cotton itself.
