1,968 new Covid inpatients, 21 more deaths

The country registered 1,968 new patients admitted for treatment and 21 more Covid-19 related fatalities, the Ministry of Public Health reported on Sunday.

This compared with 1,902 patients and 29 deaths reported on Saturday.

There were 1,966 local cases and two imported cases.

The 24-hour period saw 2,252 patients discharged from hospitals after recovering.

As of Saturday, a total of 19,624 people were receiving Covid-19 treatment, including 10,180 in hospitals. The remainder were 236 in hospitel facilities and 9.122 in home or community isolation, according to the Department of Disease Control.

Of those in hospital, 874 were seriously ill patients with lung inflammation, with 446 dependent on ventilators.

According to the department, the 27 people who died were aged from 47 to 101 with an average age of 82. All of them were Thais.

Bangkok logged two new deaths and there were one each in the adjacent provinces of Samut Sakhon and Pathum Thani.

Other central plains provinces further from the capital had eight deaths — three in Nakhon Nayok and one each in Trat, Chanthaburi, Sing Buri, Ayutthaya and Ratchaburi.

The North reported one death in Chiang Mai and another in Lamphun.

The Northeast saw five new fatalities — two in Udon Thani and one each in Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima and Khon Kaen.

The South had eight deaths — four in Surat Thani, two in Nakhon Si Thammarat and one each in Krabin and Pattani.

Vaccinations continued to progress, with 142.44 million doses administered as of Saturday. The government said 82.3% of the population has now received at least one dose of the vaccine, 77.1% at least two shots and 45.4% at least one booster shot.

On Saturday alone, 79,913 vaccine doses were administered — 8,188 as a first shot, 20,296 as a second shot and 51,429 as a booster shot.

Since the pandemic started in early 2020, there have been 4,634,180 Covid-19 cases, including 2,410,745 cases this year, with 4,582,529 complete recoveries to date.

The accumulated death toll stood at 32,027 since the beginning of the pandemic, including 10,329 so far this year.

The highest number of Covid-related fatalities in a 24-hour period was 312 recorded on Aug 13, 2021. The highest number of cases was 28,379 on April 1, 2022.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 627,169 in 24 hours to 600.35 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 1,210 to 6.47 million.
