£1.8m plan for homeless accommodation at old Nottingham car park

Plans for a £1.8 million development that would house eight homeless people in Nottingham have been welcomed by the local community. Homelessness charity Framework have applied to build a three storey building on a vacant car park on the corner of Gregory Boulevard and Birkin Avenue, between Radford and Hyson Green.

It says the development, which would consist of eight one-bedroom apartments, would provide housing for some of the most vulnerable people in the community. Framework hopes to open the "much-needed" accommodation by spring 2024.

David Seay, who lives in nearby Radford Road, told Nottinghamshire Live the development represented a "good thing". The 52-year-old said: “I think it’s a good thing that they’re turning it into homeless accommodation, it will keep homeless people off the street and compact them into one.”

Ellie Balis, 20, was also in support of the plans, said: “It’s always a good idea to shelter homeless people so I support it.” James Jenkins, of Radford, added: “I think it’s great. There's too many people on the streets, too many people who don’t want to be there.”

Framework's corporate services director Dave Newmarch said: "Working in close partnership with Nottingham City Council we share a strategic priority to provide good quality accommodation for homeless people. This development off Birkin Avenue is to provide self-contained housing with intensive support for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

"Our plan is for eight newly-built one bed flats and we have secured funding from the government towards this £1.8m scheme as well as support from the city council. Subject to the success of the current planning application we expect this much-needed accommodation to be ready for occupation in the spring of 2024."

The plans, formally submitted to Nottingham City Council on October 4, are pending consideration by the authority. Officials from Allan Joyce Architects Ltd are acting as the planning agent. Separate plans were approved in September last year for new Framework flats on the car park of its Val Roberts House head office in Gregory Boulevard.
