Shortland Public School is seeking to add two new classrooms to its campus in an "urgent" proposal to cater for the school's needs.

Plans valued at $1.4 million have been lodged with Newcastle council to build two new general learning areas at the Sandgate Road primary school.

The development would also include two "withdrawal spaces", a shared collaboration space, outdoor learning and accessible amenities. A new footpath, ramps and stairs would also be built to accommodate the new addition.

Documents lodged with the proposal state the proposed alterations and additions are not aimed at increasing student or teacher numbers.

"Rather, the new classrooms are to accommodate school needs currently accommodated elsewhere in the site," the documents state.

"The applicant has an urgent need to obtain consent for the proposed development to allow the two new classrooms [to] be included in the available infrastructure for use by the school as soon as possible during 2025."

School Infrastructure NSW approached Newcastle council about a potential development application and whether it could satisfy requirements to be an accelerated development application. However the council advised a Crown application would not meet the parameters of an Accelerated DA.

The classrooms would be added to the end of an existing building and one tree would need to be removed to accommodate the new rooms.
