Transgender and LGBTQ rights groups are expressing strong disappointment in Donald Trump’s win after the former president — as well as several local Republican candidates — leaned on anti-trans rhetoric in campaign advertisements and speeches.
Advocates for Trans Equality Executive Director Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen expressed deep concern over the election results, stating that the outcome was not as hoped for and that many in the community share in the disappointment.
Heng-Lehtinen acknowledged the fears within the transgender community and their families regarding potential restrictions on their rights under a Trump administration but offered reassurance that they are not alone in their struggles.
The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ individuals, reported a significant 125% increase in crisis calls and messages following the election.
Despite the setbacks, Heng-Lehtinen highlighted some positive developments, such as Sarah McBride becoming the first openly transgender member of Congress in Delaware and New York voters passing Proposition 1, which ensures equal protection rights for individuals based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
Looking ahead, Heng-Lehtinen emphasized the importance of maintaining a vision for an inclusive and hopeful future where all transgender individuals are treated as equals.
