A man accused of carrying out a stabbing attack in north London has appeared in court on three counts of attempted murder, as more details emerge about the Golders Green incident.
Essa Suleiman, 45, appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, charged over the attack that injured two Jewish men, Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, earlier this week.
Prosecutors told the court that Suleiman also faces a third charge of attempted murder linked to a separate knife attack in Southwark on the same day. The alleged victim, Ishmail Hussein, is understood to have known the accused for around 20 years.
He is also charged with possession of a knife in a public place. According to BBC News, Suleiman did not enter any pleas during the hearing and confirmed only his identity details.
The court heard that Suleiman suffered a medical episode during his arrest and was taken to hospital before being discharged and transferred to custody. He appeared in court wearing a police-issued grey sweatshirt and trousers, with visible bruising around his eyes.
BBC News reported that he had previously been a patient at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Reporting restrictions remain in place regarding the address linked to the Southwark incident due to its connection with supported mental health housing.
Victim discharged; case moves forward
During proceedings, it was confirmed that Shloime Rand has been discharged from hospital following treatment for his injuries. Moshe Shine also received medical care after the attack.
The case has been referred to the Old Bailey, where Suleiman is scheduled to appear on May 15 for a preliminary hearing. He remains in custody.
Officials said Suleiman was born in Somalia and arrived in the UK as a child in the early 1990s, later becoming a British citizen.
The case comes amid heightened security concerns following the Golders Green attack. The UK’s terror threat level was raised to “severe” on Thursday, reflecting a broader security assessment, according to BBC News.
Further proceedings are expected at the Old Bailey as the investigation continues, with counter-terrorism officers examining the full circumstances surrounding the attacks.
